I was contacted via email a few days ago by a prospective client, let’s call her Alice (not her real name.) She told me she knew nothing about marketing and wanted to use social media to build her business. I had never met her so I set up a meeting at my co-working space, Rowan Tree, to discuss how I could help.

A few hours before the meeting, I received an email where she said that a relative of hers was ‘learning” marketing and had agreed to help her pro bono. I wished her good luck and told her to reach out to me in the future if I could help in any way. Below is the response I should have sent.

Dear Alice,

I know that as a small business owner, you need to keep cost down. I struggle with the same issues and concerns. What I’ve come to realize, after many years, is that there are certain things that are worth spending on. Hiring an experienced professional is one of them.

Value from the start

I have been doing marketing for 15 years. Thus it has been second nature to me, and I am up and running in no time. I already have an arsenal of resources to tap into and know what works and doesn’t work. Remember, time is money. Not having an effective marketing strategy is impacting the rate you can acquire new clients, which at the end of the day means you are bringing in less money.

High-quality deliverables

I take pride in delivering high-quality work to my clients. I can guarantee the quality of my work because I have had the fortune of working at a variety of companies where excellence was the norm. This work ethic isn’t developed overnight.

The faster, the better

I can work quickly because I know the ins and outs of digital marketing. One of my defining values is to find out what my customer wants and give it to her faster than my competitors.

Results-driven

If I don’t deliver results, I don’t get paid. I use metrics to show the progress that we are making on the project. I keep track of milestones and I know when to adjust the strategy to get better results.

Excellent customer service

You are a priority to me. You are my customer and I want you to be delighted with my work. I am motivated to go above and beyond the call of duty because I am invested in your success. In other words, your success is my success.

P.S. I did send the above to her. I will keep you posted.
